There are very few experiences in life more exciting than bringing home a new puppy for the first time. It’s a memory that you and your family will cherish for years to come.
But taking care of a puppy is no smaller matter, you have to be prepared. Here are some ways to ensure your home is ready for the arrival of a new furry friend:
Purchase Any Necessary Supplies
If you’ve never had a dog before, you may be surprised to find how many supplies you need to properly care for one. Of course, you’ll need a collar and a leash for walks, and poop bags for those walks as well. You’ll require a crate to transport the puppy to the vet, among other places. Then, of course, there’s food and water bowls for obvious reasons. Temporary barriers will keep them from entering or leaving certain rooms in your home. They’ll need shampoo and a brush for grooming purposes. And toys will keep them entertained and enriched.
Get Enough Food
Food might be the most important thing you’re providing for your puppy. It’s wise to stock up for a few weeks so you don’t have to keep going back and forth to the store in the early days (puppies may eat more than you think). Purchase a food that is specifically designed for puppies to best support the dog’s health. Find a flavor or brand they like and stick with it.
Prepare Your Family and the Home
You should know going in that many puppies are energetic and may not have the best special awareness early on in life. It’s wise to move anything fragile or any prized possessions out of the way of the dog. Additionally, it’s key that you prepare any children for the changes that will occur with a puppy in the house. Things will be different – there will be increased responsibility for everyone. Make sure every member of your home is ready for that before the puppy arrives.
