Importance of Mini Dachshund Mothers
The mother of a litter of puppies is known as a “dam” in the world of breeding. It’s widely believed by dog breeders that a mother has a significantly larger influence on the puppies than the father or sire does. This is largely due to what happens after birth because the genetic makeup of a puppy comes equally from both its mother and father.
Genetics determine not only the physical appearance of a dog, but also its mental makeup in some ways. For example, a sire and dam with a similar temperament will likely produce a dog that behaves the same way as them. Of course, there are also recessive genes, which are genes that are passed down by parents although the parent don’t show those genes themselves. Chances are those genes have shown themselves at some point in the dog’s lineage. That’s why bloodlines are so important when it comes to breeding a dog.
A professional breeder will have knowledge of what a dog’s bloodlines look like going back generations. This is important because it will help inform what kind of puppy this dog will produce. Bloodlines can play a role in determining the health of a dog – have members of its lineage lived full lives? Have they tended to develop a similar medical issue? A dog’s bloodline can also tell you what kind of personality or temperament it is likely to have.
Knowing this, an ideal mother is a dog that doesn’t have a history or disease or sickness in its lineage and comes from a line of friendly, affable dogs. Of course, physical appearance will also play a role, but that is far easier to get a handle on than other important genetic aspects.
The impact of a mother, however, goes beyond just the genetics the dog passes on. The role the mother plays at the beginning of her puppy’s lives will have a profound impact on them. In the first few weeks of life, a mother is responsible for essentially all of her puppy’s needs. They can’t hear, see, or walk at first, so they rely completely on their mother and spend most of their day sleeping and nursing.
After a few weeks, they become a bit more independent and begin to eat solid food. However, this is when the all-important socialization and weaning processes occur. How a mother handles this will have a major impact on how the dog develops mentally. All the while, the breeder plays the essential role of caring for the mother while she cares for her babies.
